Dr. Jonathan Pitney himself is one of the main reasons the light house was built. My Pitney had many travels down the shore during his time in Absecon, therefore he was aware and concerned about the numerous shipwrecks. He sent to congress to have the lighthouse built, and they soon agreed. After the lighthouse was built in 1857, it immediately attracted thousands of visitors to climb its 228 steps overlooking Absecon. The Absecon Lighthouse still retains its original first order Fresnel lens, which is the only New Jersey light to do so.
